Last Updated on February 11, 2020 by Ella Woods 5 Comments

Sleep is important towards living a healthy life. When we sleep, our bodies are able to repair damaged body tissues and our minds are able to rest. Sometimes, the kind of mattress a person is using might not be good for their back. This makes it necessary for one to invest in a mattress topper. This article will go over a few things to consider before buying a mattress topper, then present the best mattress toppers for back pain

Best Mattress Topper for Back Pain

What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain is caused by using an uncomfortable mattress that does not support your entire frame well. Such a mattress might not adapt to your body, instead remaining rigid when you lie down on it which can predispose you to back pain. This back pain typically manifests in either the lower, middle or upper back – much more commonly in the lower-back because it is the region that supports a person’s top frame. Lower-Back pain comes across due to poor spine alignment when laying down to sleep on a mattress, especially if you chose to sleep on your side.

What to Consider When Buying Mattress Toppers for Back Pain and How to Choose the Best One

A mattress topper is an item that can be purchased and added to your mattress thus improving its properties. This helps lessen how much you are spending because replacing your mattress with a brand new one is often very costly. Getting a mattress topper helps address back pain by improving the comfort of your mattress thus ensuring you get a good night’s sleep. Before buying a mattress topper, one must consider:

1. How Thick And Dense Your Mattress Is:

This is an important factor to consider because it will determine how well the topper fixes your back pain as well as its overall comfort. The thickness and density of the Topper goes hand in hand with that of the mattress, namely; if you have an extra-soft mattress you should get a firmer topper to improve spin alignment without sacrificing comfort. Similarly, combining an extra-firm mattress with a super-firm topper is likely to make your bed uncomfortable to sleep in, regardless of how well it addresses your back pain. A medium density topper is often the best choice for those wishing to quickly arrive at optimum levels of comfort and spine alignment.

2. Sleeping Position:

How you sleep greatly determines the kind of topper more suitable towards reducing your back pain; a softer mattress topper is better for those who sleep on their sides, while firmer options work better for those who sleep on their backs or chests.

3. Your Weight:

Knowing which topper works for your weight is important in the topper selection process because for those above 250 pounds, a medium density pad will not match up to their weight requirement, hence it will be incapable of solving their back pain. Put differently, you need a mattress topper that can support your entire weight. As such, your selected topper must have the ability to accommodate the compression dealt by your body.

4. How thick the Topper is:

A measurement that shows the breadth of the topper as well as how much support it can offer: A topper meant for combating back pain should be of medium thickness – a balance between soft and hard. This will enable it to give an optimal balance of conformability and comfort – the perfect combination when addressing back pain. Typically, select a topper that ranges between 2 inches to 4 inches.

5. How Dense the topper is:

Measured in pounds per cubic foot, the density of toppers is an essential factor in the topper-selection process. Just like with thickness, go for a medium density topper ranging between 3 to 5 pounds per cubic foot as these; support your spine while being comfortable and durable; let certain parts of the body e.g buttocks and shoulders sink in while keeping them aligned to the back thus preventing back pain.

6. Size of the Topper:

When selecting the topper to use, ensure the size specified matches your mattress, else you might end up with one that is too big or too small for your mattress.

7. Read other customer’s reviews:

These will help you make an informed decision from other peoples’ opinions about how the mattress topper worked for them and helped them manage their back pain.

8. Material of the Topper:

There are generally two important materials used to make mattress toppers that can help reduce back pain; memory foam or latex. Like its name suggests, Memory form ‘remembers’ your body’s feel and adjusts to it thus wrapping around it well while ensuring a snuggle fit that greatly reduces back pain. Latex, on the other hand, provides unyielding support of the back thus helping keep the body in a cradle-like position.

Could you please give the best topper for a somewhat heavy person that has had 2 back disc surgerys. The
disc are on the nerve again and arthritis is severe. May be looking at another sugery. It is getting hard to just get out of the bed after sleeping a couple hours. My husband is also starting to have the same problems.
Could you please suggest the best type mattress topper. We now have a 2 year old interspring mattress with boxsprings.
    Thank you
