What You Will Need to Clean your Down Comforter
In order to clean your down comforter, you will have to make sure to have certain materials that are totally necessary. If you don’t have them, it will make the cleaning of your down comforter much more difficult than normal. So make sure you have them before going to the first step and you will be all set.
- Mild or Natural Detergent
- Soaps for down comforters (yes, they exist)
- Tennis or Dryer Balls
- Extra Large Washing Machine
- Extra Large Dryer Machine
As said above, it is totally important that you have all of these materials in order to wash your down comforter at home. If for example, you don’t possess an extra-large washing machine or dryer, you can easily go the Laundromat and find the larger washing machine to do it following the same steps.
On the other hand, if you can’t find a nice detergent, you can make your own by using vinegar, baking soda, and soap. Make sure you follow the right instructions!
Steps on How to Clean a Down Comforter
1. Take the Down Comfort off your Bed
Yes! It is totally necessary that you go to your room, grab the down comforter and take it off your bed if you want to wash it. Make sure there’s nothing else on the down comforter, some people don’t search their down comforter before taking it off and end up cleaning their cellphones – or worse!
2. Load the Washing Machine
The second step you need to follow is to load your washing machine with your down comforter, the detergent, and a little soap. Make sure you use a gentle soap and a soft detergent that won’t harm your down comforter. You don’t want your fluffy comforter to end up all scratchy and totally uncomfortable!
This video will help you know how to load your washing machine with your down comforter if you don’t have an EXTRA-LARGE washing machine.
3. Set the Proper Functions
If you want your washing machine to treat your down comforter gently and at the same time to completely clean it until it looks like new – you need to use the proper speed and cycle. In addition, it is totally recommended to use warm water.
Make sure you turn on the most delicate speed on the washing machine. Then, make sure that the rinse option (if any) is not a harmful process, if it is, you better turn it off. Some washing machines tend to have a very stormy rinse process that can harm your down comforter.
Also, it is important to avoid washing machines with an agitator. Agitators can also harm your down comforter a lot!
4. Put it in the Dryer
Now that your down comforter has passed through the washing machine, it’s time to make it go to the next adventure – the dryer!
You will need to set the dryer to a low heat cycle, or the lowest speeds and warmer temperatures if you want to treat your down comforter nicely. However, for more effectiveness on the drying, it is recommended to use those dryer balls or tennis balls. Make sure to put them alongside your down comforter to increase the effectiveness of this process.
You can take the down comforter out every 2 minutes and shake it for more cleaning and drying efficiency!
5. Make sure It is Completely Cleaned and Dried
Now that you’ve passed the down comforter through the washing machine and the dryer, it is time to make sure that the down comforter is totally cleaned. Take it out of the dryer after those 5 or 10 minutes it spent there and gave it a good look to make sure it is totally cleaned and dried.
You can grab a hairbrush or a comb and use it on the down comforter to get any fluffs out or whatever could’ve stuck to the down comforter while it was inside of those machines.
6. Enjoy Total Fluffiness!
At this step, the only things left to do is to enjoy your down comforter again. Don’t waste more of your time, go directly to your bed, put it on and get a rest from that washing!
