How to Decorate Your Home For Christmas
We have so many different traditions when decorating our home for the holidays! From putting up the Christmas trees to the lights outside, it gets daunting with what colors and types of decor to use. Here are some helpful tips on how to style different areas based on what you feel this year!
1. Have a Color Scheme!
The first thing to do is, to begin with, the basics, which is to figure out what colors you want to pop. Of course, you have your basic Christmas colors like red, green, and yellow, but why not go for something more different?
I know how difficult it can be trying to mix up different colors, especially since you want each room to have a different mood. And surprisingly, we’re going further than the typical silver and gold hues, with many using BLACK for Christmas decor!
To make this color scheme more of a cheery one, use a mix of glittered and glossy black ornaments that reflect the light, looking bright. Another interesting Christmas color trend is cashmere brown, which works amazingly with pearl creams and mate golds. These subtle palettes make your room elegant and timeless, especially when combining it with the classic colors.
2. Your Living Room
The living area is the main center of attraction, where both family and friends will stay during the festivities! So you want to go all out with Christmas decor here, making this room the highlight of your home.
Just like your Christmas tree, I recommend that you go all-natural and botanical. Not only should it look good, but smell good as well, using plants or essential oils to set the mood. I would make statements with faux flowers and a lot of greenery (like wreaths!).
Bind your wreaths around the staircases or walls, and go as big as you want without a worry of symmetries and the like! You’re aiming for homey and personal, not stiff and untouchable.

3. The Dining Room
For the dining area, the table should be the main focus, and it wouldn’t be Christmas-y enough without candles! For this area, I like using shades of gold, which are opulent and have the table shine when using candles.
Besides this, add a white table cloth as the table’s first layer, filling the space with more greenery. Add flowers, candles, berries, and things from your garden! If you don’t have a garden, no worries, you can purchase faux or plastic decor.
If you have children, stay safe and put the candles in jars. Avoid high candles, since you’ll be passing along dishes during the feasts!

4. The Hallways
These are also high traffic areas that you and your guests will first see as they enter the house. So don’t leave this area drab, add a bit of festivity here, too!
Rising trend designers see are Christmas-themed garlands around the in and outs of the front door. This adds a warm and welcoming impression, also looking amazing regardless of the time.
In the staircase, wrap greenery and fairy lights around the banister for a brighter entrance. For those with console tables, place a vase with a branch and baubles, even adding fairy lights to match the stairs.
5. Your Bedrooms
These are also high traffic areas that you and your guests will first see as they enter the house. So don’t leave this area drab, add a bit of festivity here, too!

6. The Kitchen Area
For the kitchen, I like it to match the dining area and add more personality to it. You can do this by hanging Christmas cards and small ornaments using wooden clothespin by the window. Suspend colorful ornaments with pine boughs in a pot rack for more sparkle.
You can also have tiny decorated trees by your sinks, small Christmas village statues by the cupboards, and maybe a touch of fairy lights again. However, I don’t recommend that you use lights since you’ll be handling water and appliances around.
7. The Exterior
As for the outside of your home, you either do two things: Keep the design suite or embrace the holiday spirit and go all out! Hang Christmas decor around your windows, like string lights across the house and maybe a few ornaments or statues.
If you have the time and want to add more, then hang wreaths around your door and corners of the home with lights and decors. This has your home pop in the morning and night, looking amazing with the lights on in the dark! Use an automatic timer to switch the lights on and off at the right times.
8. Keep Things Simple and Add DIY
Today, minimalistic and simple is in, and while I love going all out during Christmas, I also want to mention how beautiful staying simple can be, too. Beauty is in the smaller details, like adding evergreen accents and a candle glow which gives rooms enough of a holiday feel.
You should also opt to be playful and add a touch of different colors and cute ornaments you made yourself! It’s great to do these DIY Christmas projects with your kids, decorating it for the family to love.
9. Your Christmas Tree Should Shine

Now, this is the first thing EVERYONE thinks of when doing their Christmas decor! The Christmas tree is the classic piece that should stand out when people enter the room.
A lot of people have debated whether real or artificial trees are better, though that boils down to personal preferences. I like real ones because of how authentic it looks, and choosing the perfect one makes the Christmas experience extra special!
To decorate it, start with a theme and chosen scheme, coordinating all the festive decorations in the room, which makes your home look homier. For me, I prefer natural themes so there are animal or floral ornaments, though add anything you feel interests you and matches your personality!
10. Extra Helpful Christmas Decor Tips
Besides the decorating tips above, here are some tips to try out:
- Layer various Christmas greenery for more color and design in the same shade
- Add more plaid patterns with Christmas decor, using red and green plaid for the classic holiday vibe
- Frame your main pieces of furniture with garlands and even add festive ornaments to your chandeliers
- Use seasonal scents like diffusing fragrances like pine, cranberry, cinnamon, or gingerbread!
